What’s the Most Efficient Method of Changing Air Filters?

Replacing an air filter on your AC appliance isn’t hard to do. But if you haven’t done it before, it might be a confusing process. To help you out, we’ve pinpointed the most difficult parts of replacing one and how you can overcome them with more efficient methods.

Each unit is different, so it would be difficult to explain how to do them all. Most, however, have similar key points, so we’ll focus on those for the sake of simplicity. Here, we’ll explore how most AC unit’s air filters are changed.

Efficient methods of changing air filters

Changing an air filter involves only a few steps. Before you begin, you should make sure you turn the system off, to prevent any debris from accidentally getting sucked into the unit, should it turn on while you’re replacing the filter. Before you do that, though, there are a few different things you will need to know beforehand. Those would be:

  • Where the air filter is located
  • what size of air filter you need
  • which direction the filter needs to face

First thing you should do is to check your manual to see where it’s located on your particular unit. If one isn’t available, you will have to do some searching. While there are many places to find one, more often than not, you’ll find it next to the furnace, or within the air duct system itself. Find a cover and peek inside. You should see an air filter resting inside the duct work. When you’ve located it, check to see what size it is. You’ll find that information on one of the sides of the filter. Then purchase a high-quality filter, in that size, to replace your old one.

Now, you must insert the new one correctly. On the filter, you should see an arrow pointing in a direction. That tells you that the filter needs to point toward an air handler and away from the return duct. This will allow for proper air flow for the air conditioning unit. Replace the old one with the new replacement making sure the arrow is pointing toward the handler. Put the cover back on the filter and turn the air conditioning system back on.
